This video discusses the challenges of germinating different types of seeds, especially Landrace seeds, and shares effective techniques to enhance germination rates.
Hello Growers,
Today, I am sharing a short video to talk about germination and the difficulty of germinating certain seeds. Can you tell the difference between these seeds and these seeds? Like me, you won’t be able to just by looking at them.
But these seeds are polyhybrid seeds, y aquí tenemos Landrace seeds. If you try to germinate them like normal seeds, you will have less than 30% of them germinating. Why are they so hard to germinate? It is actually a defense mechanism. They have a very thick coating that allows them to remain dormant during the winter and wait for spring to germinate. Unlike polyhybrid seeds, which germinate prematurely at the end of winter due to their fine coating, Landrace seeds require more moisture to enter when temperatures rise.
As for the Landrace seeds, everything will also depend on the origin of the variety. You have:
- Tropical Landrace
- High Mountain Landrace
- Late Landrace
- Some cold countries
Each of these varieties has different defense mechanisms. There are also very easy-to-germinate Landraces, for example, those that come from a country where there is no extreme climate. But for the Landrace seeds that are complicated to germinate, if you use the right techniques, you can increase the germination rate from 30% to 90%.
If we manage to bypass the defenses by weakening their coatings, your seeds will have every chance to germinate. So, for this technique, you will need to place the seed correctly. You just have to make sure that the two edges touch the two sides of the clamp, and you can gently press until you hear the crack. But be careful because you might damage the embryo inside the seed.
You can use this technique even with polyhybrid seeds. It’s just that if you have a temperamental seed that doesn’t want to germinate, you can give it a little helping hand. For this second technique, you simply need to rub the seed on sandpaper to weaken its coating.

All right, bye!
