The number of gastrointestinal diseases in developed countries increases, with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis being the most common. To reduce, ameliorate or alleviate the symptoms of these deseases, pharmaceutical companies launch to market different drugs. However, marijuana naturally acts as a natural drug with excellent results, as we can conclude from the outcomes of several scientific studies or from clinical trials or patients who have test it.
Heartburn, bloating, vomiting, diarrhea, lack of appetite, etc….are some of the most common symptoms of main intestinal inflammatory diseases which, unfortunately, are becoming more common.
Fortunately, there are also drugs and natural products that help not only to reduce these symptoms, but also help to treat this disease in itself. Marijuana is one of those natural products that in case of bowel inflammatory symptoms, such as those caused by Crohn’s disease, is an excellent ally to reduce it.
Let’s focus on the characteristics of these health problems.
Main bowel inflammatory diseases
One of the biggest problems of today’s society is the stress in which we live. We get up hurriedly in the morning, we run all day to get everywhere and we leave aside important daily tasks as maintain a correct diet, leaving aside the sedentary life to do some exercise, or taking the correct sleeping hours that our body needs so that it does not suffer.
Factors all of them that affect our health and, mainly, the gastrointestinal health. This means, that diseases related to this part of our body increase in the world, and Spain is not an exception. Within this type of disease, inflammatory bowel diseases are the most.
The most common inflammatory bowel diseases are: Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis, as the company EY explains “Ulcerative Colitis (UC) and Crohn’s Disease (CD) are the intestinal conditions with higher incidence and prevalence within EII, with approximately 58% and 42% of cases in Spain respectively. ”
The main symptoms of these diseases are very similar between them, “being the main difference the area of the digestive system where inflammation occurs; While UC affects only the large intestine or colon, CD can affect any part of the digestive tract, “explained EY.
Specifically, the most frequent symptoms in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases are:
- * Diarrhea: especially in cases of UC.
- * Fever: which begins with the process of intestinal inflammation.
- * Anemia: is permanent and intensified with outbreaks.
- * Fatigue: constant and unpleasant sensation; Anemia worsens this situation.
Other symptoms that may also occur, but that have variations between Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis:
- * Abdominal pain: uncommon in the case of UC and which can occur in 80% of cases of CD.
- * Anal lesions: uncommon in the case of UC, ulcers or stenosis in the case of CD.
One of the most complicated things about this kind of diseases is its diagnosis, which is slow and complicated. “It is estimated that 4 of 10 patients are diagnosed one year after the onset of the first symptoms and around 17% of patients takes more than 5 years” EY informs.
Marijuana and Digestive System Diseases
Cannabinoids present in marijuana acquire special importance since regulate digestive system, providing different benefits.
Phytocannabinoids provided from cannabis plant reduce nausea or vomiting, increase appetite, or improve bowel behavior. These are just some of the benefits marijuana gives people with inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis.
The reduction of swelling in the intestinal tract, one of the main and most uncomfortable symptoms of the mentioned diseases, is possible thanks to the ingestion of cannabis preparations in a controlled way whenever it is cannabis for medicinal uses.
As a consequence, it is also possible to reduce the abdominal pain, and other symtoms associated to spasticity of smooth muscle in the bowel1.
On the other hand, it is also known that cannabis preparations reduce the motility of the intestine, that is, the ability to perform complex and coordinated movements of the digestive system, while decrease secretions produced by mentioned swelling, and consequently, reduce, in turn, vomiting and nausea.
Relieving diarrhea is other of the positive effect that cannabis has on these diseases, especially on Chron’s disease. The anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties associated with cannabis allow CB1 activation receptors in the intestinal tract, reducing gastrointestinal motility and, therefore, the symptoms of diarrhea.
