How many seed banks can you memorize?
Let’s be real for a second. We all love growing, but swapping out equipment in the middle of a cycle can be a drag. You’re busy, you’ve got plants stretching, and the last thing you want is to be climbing into your grow tent to switch a hot bulb, risking a drop or a burn. That’s where Dual Spectrum HPS bulbs come in to save the day.
These aren't your grandpa's streetlights. These are specialized High Pressure Sodium (HPS) lamps designed with a tweaked spectrum. They pump out the classic orange/red light your ladies need for explosive flowering, but they also include a boosted blue/white spectrum. This means you can use the same bulb from seedling to harvest. It’s the ultimate convenience for the practical grower who wants professional results without the extra hassle.
Before you grab one of these bad boys, there are a few things you need to check off your list to ensure your setup runs smoothly. It’s not just about screwing in a lightbulb; it’s about matching the power to your space.
In this category, you’ll find the heavy hitters. We’re talking about reliability and photon output.
On one hand, you have Agrolite SHP Mixed Lamps. These are the workhorses of the growing world. They offer incredible value for money and are perfect if you want decent yields without breaking the bank. They are reliable, sturdy, and get the job done beautifully.
On the other hand, if you want the Ferrari of grow lights, you look at the Philips Green Power Dual Spectrum. These bulbs are legendary for a reason. They maintain their lumen output longer and have a spectrum that indoor marijuana seeds absolutely love, pushing the genetics to their limit. Whichever you choose, you’re upgrading your game by simplifying your workflow.
Still on the fence? Let’s break down why this is a smart move for your indoor garden using a bit of logic:
Technically, yes, but be careful. HPS bulbs are very powerful and emit a lot of heat. Young plants are delicate. If you use a 400W or 600W mixed bulb, keep it at a safe distance (at least 60-80cm) to avoid frying your little ones. For the very first week, a lower power CFL or LED might be safer, but once they have a few sets of leaves, the mixed bulb will make them explode with growth.
Even though they still light up, HPS bulbs lose intensity and spectrum quality over time. For the best yields, we recommend changing them every 3 to 4 crops (about 9-12 months of continuous use). Using an old bulb is one of the most common reasons for lower yields!
Yes! Most modern mixed bulbs work perfectly with both magnetic and digital ballasts. Digital ballasts are actually better because they can often dim the bulb or drive it more efficiently, extending its life and stabilizing the light output.
It depends on your goal. If you want absolute maximum perfection, specialized bulbs (MH for veg, HPS for bloom) might give you a 5% edge. But for the vast majority of growers, the Dual Spectrum bulb offers 95% of the performance with 100% less hassle. It is the preferred choice for practical, high-yield home growing.
