All cannabis genetics are medicinal to a greater or lesser extent. On this basis, a distinction must be made between those most appropriate for treating certain specific ailments, i.e. classifying strains according to their benefits.

To do this we will separate the varieties by their chemotype, to specify the medicinal properties that each one of them can provide us with. On the one hand pure THC, on the other hand pure CBD, mixtures that have both THC and CBD in different proportions, and finally plants that contain high levels of other cannabinoids. Do you want to know which are the most demanded types of medical marijuana? You'll find them below...

Ever since commercial seed banks started spreading in the 80s and 90s, everyone had the same obsession, to find the plants with the highest THC levels. It was always thought that the more THC they contained, the more power they could have as well, but this is not entirely true.

A few years ago medicinal properties of terpenes and flavonoids, the molecules responsible for aroma and taste in nature, were discovered. Today we know that a strain with lower THC content can be more potent than one with higher levels of this cannabinoid. Varieties containing Beta-Caryophyllene make the power of THC more effective, this is because this terpene breaks down cellular barriers and causes more THC to enter the bloodstream, and thus the brain and central nervous system.

THC has many interesting medical properties, it has proven to be very effective in treating glaucoma, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, Crohn's, and as many of you know, to whet the appetite of people who need to eat.

Varieties of medical marijuana that contain only CBD, or contain less than 1% of other cannabinoids emerged only a few years ago. Industrial hemp is the most widespread kind of plant, but within strains of psychoactive cannabis there were none.

The first commercial variety pure CBD was Dinafem's Dinamed, it was also the first non-psychotropic marijuana plant on the market. But quickly others came out like Solodiol from Elite Seeds, Medikit from Buddha Seeds or Sweet Pure CBD from Sweet Seeds.

CBD is the most important cannabinoid together with THC, together they are very effective to treat different ailments, but separately CBD also offers many benefits, if you want to know more about this cannabinoid I recommend you to read this article.

Of course, each phyto-cannabinoid has its own health benefits, but apart from THC and CBD the others are usually in very small proportions. Nowadays, work is being done to raise the levels of THCV, CBDV, CBG, CBC or CBN, even pure CBG or pure THCV varieties are starting to come out.

Surely in a short time we have in the market genetics with high concentration of each of these cannabinoids, so let's review the properties that can bring us each of them.

THCV. This molecule is special, it really is a THC homologue, but they are antagonistic in other ways. It can be said that THCV intensifies the psychoactive effects of THC, but it also causes them to end sooner.

One particularity of this cannabinoid is that inhibits hunger, unlike THC opens up the appetite, THCV reduces it. This can have many uses in the area of diets, for this reason and others may be very interesting in the not too distant future. It also can be used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, in painkiller, anti-epileptic and bone growth aid.

We currently have THCV-rich marijuana strains like TGA Subcool's Jack The Ripper that's over 5%, or Novarine's Elite Seeds that has a THC:THCV ratio of 1:1, and we're sure to have THCV cigars available in no time at all, so I'm looking forward to trying them out, Right?

CBDV is less studied than other cannabinoids, and it is also difficult to find pure cannabis varieties that contain a significant level of CBDV. The only ones found so far come from the northern Himalayan region.

Since the beneficial properties of this molecule were discovered, work began to increase its level in marijuana varieties. Cannabidivarin is not psychoactive and has been shown to be very effective for treating seizures in mice, and may be very interesting for epilepsy. It also has antiemetic properties, so can be good for people who are receiving chemotherapy or other treatments that cause nausea.

This compound acts on the TRPV1 receptor, responsible for regulating body temperature and some types of pain, this may also be interesting for future medical applications of marijuana.

CBG was not going to be less. Cannabigerol is the precursor of other cannabinoids like THC and CBD, it is not psychoactive but has certain therapeutic properties very interesting for us.

  1. Anti-inflammatory, it eliminates or greatly reduces inflammations, and with them, the pain produced by them, so it can be said that it is also an analgesic.
  2. Antitumoral, it slows down and in some cases stops the development of tumors.
  3. Antibacterial, very effective in combating certain types of bacteria and fungi.
  4. Narcotic, helps people with insomnia fall asleep.

It's also very good for glaucoma treatment, because lowers eye blood pressure. It helps bone development and is effective against Crohn's disease.

CBC. In the future, this cannabinoid will surely give a lot to talk about, because it is like politicians, the more they investigate, the more properties they find. Cannabicromene is also not psychoactive when isolated, but it is thought that may make the psychoactive effect of THC or THCV more potent.

Among the proven benefits of this molecule are the following ones:

  1. Anti-inflammatory, reduces or eliminates inflammation.

  2. Neuroprotective, stimulates the development and promotes the emergence and survival of neuronal stem cells.

  3. Analgesic, especially for headaches or migraines.

  4. Anti-depressant, in this sense much more effective than CBD.

  5. Narcotic, helps to sleep.

  6. Antibacterial, it eliminates fungi and bacteria in a more effective way than THC and CBD.

The CBC also stimulates bone development, and new uses are sure to be discovered. The pity is that this compound is found in very small quantities in all the varieties that have been studied.

CBN. Cannabinol is a very special compound, more than a cannabinoid as such it could be considered a molecule produced by the degradation or oxidation of THC. This means that when THC is not well preserved, or is exposed to oxygen, light or heat slowly changes into CBN.

Cannabinol has very little psychoactivity, but it can produce certain effects, such as dizziness or vertigo. It is also thought that reduces the anxiety that THC can cause in some users. It also has other medicinal properties like:

  1. Anti-inflammatory, eliminates or greatly reduces inflammation.

  2. Analgesic, may be more potent than THC in this regard.

  3. Antioxidant, very effective in combating free radicals.

  4. Antispasmodic, relieves, reduces and even eliminates seizures.

  5. Immunosuppressant, strengthens the defenses and the immune system.

So far, marijuana seeds that have proven most effective in fighting disease or illness are the mixed ones, what does this mean? These are the varieties that contain both THC and CBD, as well as other cannabinoids.

Strains that have high levels of THC and CBD may contain them in different ratios, or in other words, different proportions of these cannabinoids. The most common are THC:CBD 1:1, 1:2, 2:1, 1:3 and 3:1, but there are more.

Cannabis plants that contain a lot of THC and CBD are more effective thanks to the synergy these phyto-cannabinoids create with each other which, added to the synergy they create with terpenes and flavonoids, makes marijuana the most powerful medicine on earth. That synergy is called the entourage effect
