Marijuana seed banks
If you prefer to look for your cannabis seeds by the brands that pack them, this is the ideal place, because here you can find the best selection of seed banks.
Seed banks are companies that collect cannabic genetics, some collect strains in their place of origin, others are dedicated to publish copies of well-known seeds in a different format, and there are also some who copy directly the trendy plants in every moment.Over the last few years many seed banks have emerged around the world, filling the market with new varieties, but how did it all start? You'll find out right away...
In the late 1970s, a group of Californian cannabis enthusiasts founded an association that would be the germ of the world's first cannabis seed bank. It was called Cultivator's Choice, and was part of the breeding and stabilization project for new hybrids.Later on, this group of breeders formed Sacred Seeds, the first company to offer commercial cannabis seeds worldwide, being a success, even though it lasted a short time for legal reasons.
Sacred Seeds had in its catalogue some of the mythical varieties that even today are still present, names like Skunk#1, Original Haze, or Afghaní#1 were a milestone among weed growers and consumers, and remain key pieces for many breeding projects today.
After establishing more restrictive laws in the U.S. with its paranoid "War on Drugs", many American breeders decided to leave the country. Many went to Amsterdam and other parts of the Netherlands, which at the time enjoyed soft drug legislation, others went to Canada, and some even fled to South America.
In Holland they were able to continue with their breeding projects, and even take advantage of their law to cultivate in a big way and be able to select better. The Skunkman released their genetics and thanks to them were founded several Dutch seed banks, The Seedbank was one of them, which later joined Sensi Seeds. The Flying Dutchmen was another bank in partnership with Eddie, and the Positronics seed bank, helped with strains that also imported others who also fed on Californian breeds.
Positronics was more than just a Cannabis seed bank, it became the first Grow shop in the world, and in Amsterdam it became the Mecca that all smokers wanted to visit. It was founded by Wernard Bruining, and with the help of Old Ed, Ed Rosenthal and a few others made Positronics known throughout the Cannabis culture worldwide.Unfortunately, Dutch laws changed, and overnight the control of seeds and products related to cannabis cultivation went from paying 6% to 19% VAT, retroactively. The change led to the closure of this company, as it was impossible for them to pay the tax difference.
Later on, with the appearance of the Spanish feminized seed banks, Wernard Bruining returned to business, once again placing this company at the forefront of global cannabis.Spain has always had a great influence on the Dutch cannabis market, as well as other European countries. The golden age of Dutch seeds was in the 90's, decade in which hybrids like AK-47, Jack Herer, White Widow, Super Silver Haze, and many other classics came out. Until 1998, when the law changed and it caused many companies that commercialized cannabis seeds to lose their parental strains with which they were creating their new hybrids.
This proved to be a big problem, as seed banks in Amsterdam and elsewhere in the Netherlands could no longer copy the varieties that had made them so successful.
The time came when the new seeds of these varieties did not look like the classic ones, but fortunately in Spain many mother plants selected from the Dutch genetics had been saved, with which feminized seeds began to be produced, which represented much better the famous characteristics than the seeds from the original banks.
History of cannabis seed banks
In 2005 there were already Dutch seed banks selling feminized seeds, Dutch Passion, Paradise Seeds, Green House, and some more that already had in their catalogues varieties in regular format and the same ones in 100% feminine version.
But there were no banks offering only feminized seeds until that year. Dinafem, and later Sweet Seeds seed bank, took a great risk by getting into the market of cannabis genetic banks only with female seeds, Dutch feminized seeds did not give the best results, but time has proved them right, becoming the most wanted by most cannabis growers.
The success of these seed brands caused the rise of many more, in 2007 was released the first seed bank in Barcelona, a place that concentrates many of the companies in the sector, Eva Seeds, Medical Seeds, Pyramid Seeds, Ripper Seeds and several more, this has a lot to do with the green fever in that city, don't you think?
Although the modern concept of marijuana seed bank was born in the USA, the war on drugs is also native to this country. For this reason, for many years they were no longer the epicentre of cannabis seed production. During these years some breeders of American cannabis varieties emigrated to Holland, to be able to sell seeds without problems, as it happened with TH Seeds or more recently with DNA Genetics seed bank.
For a few years now the legal landscape in many states of this country is changing, and since then new seed banks in the United States have been constantly emerging, and even old breeders who were retired have returned to their old ways.
